Hi, I’m an Intern.

Those are the first words I spoke to the receptionist at the radio station this morning.  I didn’t know what else to say, and I couldn’t be sure that she remembered me.  Leave it to me to make an awkward first impression.

Anyway, I am an intern.  My brand of intern is significantly different than being Meredith Grey.  I’m assuming there’s less blood and less drama involved (Although with two employees leaving within a week or so of each other, maybe not.), and there’s certainly no one who looks like Patrick Dempsey working here.  We do have copious amounts of free coffee, though.  I’m sure I’ll have to keep reminding myself not to drink too much of it since I have recently discovered it upsets my stomach.  Besides, they only have powdered creamer, and that’s kind of gross.  Sorry, Coffee Mate.

Speaking of coffee, I should note that it is the only thing currently in my system.  Also, there are weird things in the general coffee-making area.  There is a sign on the coffeemaker itself, which has to be at least ten years old, that says, “If you run out of joe, make some mo’.”  Inexplicably, there is a half-full bottle of hazelnut syrup (weird) and the grossest container of honey I have ever seen in my life.  The poor little honey bear is turned upside down, and maybe a quarter of the container is almost crystallized in the bottom of the container.  GROSS.

My first day went well, though.  I watched my supervisor, whom I will call Mr. H, as his last name starts with an H, edit a promotion for the show one of our religion professors hosts.  (Our school has an entire block on Sunday mornings and evenings on the AM radio station.  Our university president and his wife have a show, the aforementioned professor has a show, and our radio drama classes’ performances are aired.  I should also tell y’all that I am in the radio drama class for this semester, and it is very much against my will.)  Anyway, I have a cubicle, and I have officially seen the inside of an actual station; it is not nearly as impressive as I imagined, but our building is kind of old.  It’s vintage radio.

I made a spreadsheet for our public file today.  I also wrote five PSAs, for which I had to Google phone numbers.  (PS:  If you want someone to contact you for more information, shouldn’t you leave a phone number?)  That was the best part of my day:  Googling things.  I love Google almost as much as Wikipedia, where my current article of choice is a list of Nestlé brands.  Nespresso, anyone?  No?  Maybe Folgers Simply Smooth might be a better idea for me.

I had a meeting to go to upon my return to campus.  There’s a job fair for the colleges in our area, and each school picks twenty or so juniors and seniors to represent them; each of the students chosen gets the opportunity to network, and I am pretty pumped about it.  However, applying meant submitting a rough draft résumé, and mine was definitely rough draft.  Y’all, I completely forgot until, like, two hours before the thing was due, so I kind of whipped one up in a few minutes, and I am pretty sure it showed.  I won’t really admit that I did it in five minutes, though, because this is a huge opportunity, and admitting that will maybe make me look unprofessional, and unprofessional I am not.

Oh, and Resolve to Resolve is pretty awesome.  I’ve done a little over seven miles in four days :).  Next week’s goal is to go to the Wellness Center three to five times a week, which is pretty much done and done.  Where else am I going to walk/jog/run a mile or two every night?  Outside?  I think not.
