Bonjour!

I’m here in Canada, and it’s pretty fabulous so far. All the other students are wonderful. The majority are Canadian, so being American … and living in the South nine months out of the year … and being in a sorority are very rare traits here. Lots of people have asked about the sorority thing; it’s kind of funny because I’m so used to living in Tennessee where almost everyone I know is Greek. It’s never a question in the States, but it is here. That’s my first lesson on cultural diversity haha.

I’m staying with a family — two women and a cat, actually — and I kind of wish I would have chosen the dorms. My host mothers are really nice, but one of them is retired (and the other is probably old enough to be retired), and I miss people my own age. I love being at school, but it’s really awkward at my host family’s house. I don’t really enjoy living with strangers … totally not my thing.

There are tons of wonderful people here, and I am very hopeful we will make lots of plans to keep ourselves busy (mostly to avoid the awkwardness of watching TV with the families). I am really excited for the days when we stay late at school and when we have weekend trips and all that. The more I have to do, the happier I am, and the less I have to make awkward conversation in which I cannot remember simple words, the happier I will be. My host family has a lake house somewhere, and I think they go quite often. I hope I can avoid those vacations; I am not a very good host daughter, I don’t suppose (haha)!

I finally learned how to use the Québécoise keyboard … yay! Also, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to write in English. I think that’s a good sign, especially after three days in school. I love my professor; she reminds me of my high school French teacher, who is absolutely amazing. I don’t mind studying French for three-ish hours at all because everything is so much fun! My love for French has been renewed … thanks, Chicoutimi!

Um … I suppose that’s it for now. I’m going to take my very first yoga class in about a half an hour. That should be interesting … and hopefully not very painful :).

A bientôt!
