Qui Suis-Je?

I started taking French in seventh grade. We used a book called Allons-y (French for “Let’s go!”), and one of the first things in the first chapter was a section called “Qui suis-je?” (That’s French for “Who am I?”) I think that might have been the section about how to introduce yourself, but seeing as how that was ten years ago, I don’t really remember. I do, however, remember that one of the book’s supplemental materials included a rap about French names, and much to my horror, my very white, very middle-aged French teacher (who also taught seventh grade English) attempted to perform it for the class. Comment dit-on “awkward”?

Anyway, whenever “Who am I?” pops into my head, it is always translated into French. And then yesterday, one of my professors was lecturing about interpersonal communication and self, and one of the first few slides was titled “Who Are You?” There were three things under that:

What five things are you most proud of?
What five things do you do best?
List five things you believe in.

The professor asked if any of us wanted to share, and considering it was eight in the morning, no one was really jumping all over it. It did get me thinking, though, so I thought, hey, I need a new blog, so here y’all go.

What five things are you most proud of?
1. I’m putting myself through college. Granted, it’s taking some loans, but Mama and Daddy are not paying for it. And yes, it’s going to suck paying those loans back, but college is for sure a worthwhile investment.
2. I worked all summer in a sandwich shop to buy my car. That’s right, a meat slicer paid for my car, which is simultaneously awesome and delicious? I guess it was for everyone else because I really and truly did not eat Subway (not where I worked) for over a year. That’s also because it was the last thing I ate before my ear drum burst, but that’s a different story.
3. I made it through this summer. It was pretty un-fun, but I lived to tell about it. And tell about it I did.
4. I’m going to graduate college in a little over three months! Basically, I’m terrified, but I’m doing it.
5. In the same vein as number four, I’ve made it through (almost) four years of college away from my parents. It’s been tricky, and I don’t think there’s been a week that’s passed that I haven’t missed them, but I am who I am today because of that. And everything else.

What five things do you do best?
1. Love people.
2. Laugh.
3. Multitask.
4. Cook and bake.
5. Write and read.

List five things you believe in.
1. God
2. Love, no matter what
3. Fighting for what I love
4. Making sacrifices for people and things I love
5. Doing what’s right

So I guess that’s me. Who are you?
