To my oldest friend in the whole world,
Did you know that in about two months, if our friendship were a person, it would be eligible to get its drivers license? That’s pretty impressive, especially considering the fact that we’re twenty-one.
We both started kindergarten when we were four. It seems ridiculous now, but that’s the way it was in California. Turn five before December 1, start kindergarten. So we did. You went to a different school, but we were really lucky to be in the same first grade class. That’s one of the best things to happen in my life.
I honestly have no idea how we met or became friends; I just know that we did, and I am forever grateful because in sixteen years, you’ve become my best friend and my oldest friend. What makes this even more impressive is that we haven’t lived in the same state since we were almost ten. Almost twelve years later, we’re still friends.
I know we fought about stupid stuff. I know we got on each other’s nerves. But I also know that I am so lucky to have you in my life, even though you live three thousand miles away from me. I know that no matter what, I can always count on you and tell you what’s going on. I know that when I find exactly the right man for me and get married, you’ll be there in a purple bridesmaid dress (I promise it will be REALLY CUTE and not lavender.) and looking fabulous. (And I promise you’ll met Mr. Right before we get married because that’d be both really awkward and really inappropriate for my best friend to meet my husband on the day of our wedding.) I know we don’t talk as much as we should, and I KNOW we don’t see each other as much as we want, but you’re still my best friend. Clearly neither time nor distance will put our friendship asunder.
Anyway, you are amazing and one of the most fantastic people I have ever met in my entire life. I am so proud of everything you’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. I am ridiculously lucky to have you in my life, and I love you. Here’s to sixteen HUNDRED more years :).
Love,
Allie

[...] My very first best friend still lives in California. Her name is Denise, and we met in first grade. She spent two-ish years in Santa Barbara and has recently returned to San Jose. Incidentally, that is also where my brother will be going to law school. I smell a vacation. [...]

Allie,
You are ridiculously amazing. I love you more than words can say. Thank you for being there through EVERYTHING. It’s a pretty strong testament considering we only spent four years together, at such a young age, before being separated by the majority of a country for the next twelve.
You’re proud of me? Honey, you have soared miles.. You’ve accomplished SO much and I am envious of how amazing your life is :) I cannot imagine my life without you in it and all you have given me (It sounds like I’m the one writing wedding vows here, heh.) You, too, will be standing along side my in my big day – whenever that comes – and I can’t wait for the day that I get to do the same for you!
I love you and miss you,
Denise <3
