In the spirit of the holiday, here’s what I’m thankful for this year:
My family: This is a no-brainer. I have the most supportive parents in the world, and my siblings are two of my best friends. My older brother is great for advice, and my sister is great for when I need cheering up. This year, I’m especially thankful for their support, particularly during the months of job hunting and unemployment.
My friends: Much like my family, the amount of support I’ve received from my friends over the past year has been unbelievable. Besides the obvious woes of unemployment, other things have sucked. For example, some people are jerks. (PS: It took a lot of restraint not to write what I really could say.) Life is messy, but it’s okay if you have someone who can help you clean up the mess.
My sorority sisters: These girls bridge the gap between family and friends. It is such a blessing to be able to see my amazing sisters every day of the week, to be able to support them as an alumna, and to be able to keep these girls so close to me. It might be selfish of me to want them around me all the time, but I am so lucky. Their love and support and well wishes got me through a lot of loneliness on the road, and that’s reason enough to be thankful.
My job: Long story short, it took an inappropriately long time for this job to happen. It took me some time not to be mad about it, but in the end, everything works out the way it’s meant to work out. I love, love, love my job and can’t imagine not doing this with my life. I can’t imagine not going to work every day, even if it does take some time to drag myself out of bed sometimes :). And I have an office! How ridiculous is that?
Tennessee: No matter where I go, no matter how long I’m gone, there’s no better feeling than crossing the Tennessee state line or pulling in the parking lot and knowing I’m home. Sometimes that’s all you need to keep you from going crazy.
