Yesterday was the big event in my office. The save the date for this event went out in November, so that ought to give you a good idea of how long this thing took to plan. It’s the biggest, most important thing we do. I wish I could say things were flawless, that everyone showed up, that all of my ambassadors did what they were supposed to do, but there’s really no such thing as perfect. High school kids are flaky — I imagine the few people who didn’t show up simply forgot to come. — and my student ambassadors are sometimes unreliable. However, the important thing is that I got a lot of compliments, and I was told this was the best group of students we’ve ever had at this event. I’m going to take complete credit for that — but only because over a third of the attendees were my kids … and there are only three counselors working with freshmen.
So things went well. Needless to say, I am beyond pleased. I am also beyond relieved that it is over. It was a lot of fun, but it also consumed my life at work, so it’s going to be nice not to have to hear, “What else do we have to do?” I would totally take tomorrow off as a reward, but I can’t — I’ve been planning another event for guidance counselors, and that’s Monday. And then there’s another alumni/admissions event this weekend. And then we have an open house to plan. Yep, this is pretty much the job that never ends.
All in all, though, not a bad gig.
