Okay, Seriously?

I don’t watch  American Idol.  I watched the whole second season — the Clay/Ruben season — because it was still kind of new and different.  Also, I’m pretty sure that was, what, 2002?  I was sixteen.  Watching American Idol was cool.  Now, I don’t watch that much TV, period, and when I do, it’s probably not reality.

However, I watched the last ten minutes or so of this season’s finale and think both Adam and Kris were equally talented and deserving of the win.  Maybe it’s because I have no particular bias towards either contestant (I will, however, say that Kris’s musical style is more in tune with mine.), but could the people of America please be happy for Kris?  Shouldn’t the time after winning American Idol be reserved for celebration?  This is huge — America thinks that out of thousands of people who auditioned, Kris is the best.  And no matter who actually won, this is the beginning of a career for Kris and Adam.  That’s kind of awesome.  Am I the only one who thinks it’s grossly unfair to have headlines like, “Did America Get It Wrong?” the day after someone wins?  Isn’t that just kind of hurtful and mean?

I understand.  It sucks when you want someone to win and they don’t.  It happens, but it doesn’t mark the end of anyone’s career.  As any number of shows devoted to American Idol on the TV Guide Channel will tell you, most of the contestants, including runners up, have enjoyed moderately successful careers.  It doesn’t matter if you win American Idol or not:  Making it in the music industry isn’t easy for anyone.  I just think everyone should be happy for Kris and Adam for making it that far.  They both might end up being insanely successful.  If Adam ends up pulling a Clay and being more successful, I think Kris would be cool with that.  If neither of them make it huge, the world isn’t going to end.  Besides, if it matters that much to you who won American Idol, you either should have voted more or should maybe re-evaluate your life choices.  After all, kids, it’s just TV.

Sorry for the rant.  I just saw a lot of negative headlines focusing on how Adam didn’t win, and I felt bad for poor little Kris.  I know my feelings would be way hurt by that lack of support.  I just wish people would remember that Mama is always right:  If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.  And say please and thank you.
